Counsilman-Hunsaker, in association with Hastings & Chivetta Architects, was selected to design a cutting-edge, world-class aquatics complex for the University of Missouri-Columbia. The design intent was to encourage maximum participation in a welcoming environment as a gathering place where students want to be.
The award-winning, resort-like aquatic venue has met and exceeded students’ expectations. Amenities include:
• Innovative indoor ADA accessible leisure pool
• Current channel
• Vortex
• Waterfall
• Haystack, small inlet that allows swimmers to surround themselves around hydrotherapy jets
• Open swim area
• High-tech underwater sound system with drop-down screens for viewing movies or Mizzou sporting events
• Oversized whirlpool spa
• Outdoor leisure pool with ramp entry and bench seating
• Olympic-sized 50-meter by 25-yard pool with warm-water whirlpool spa
• Two moveable bulkheads and moveable floor
• Separate diving well with ten-meter diving tower and four springboards
In 2007, MU was a recipient of the distinguished ‘Dream Designs’ award from Aquatics International magazine. In 2007 and 2006, Athletic Business magazine recognized the MU facility as an ‘Architectural Showcase.’ In 2006, they won the 2006 Outstanding Sports Facilities award from National Intramural Sports Association (NIRSA), and was also featured in Recreation Management magazine.
